For the second consecutive year, a team from Illinois Division 4 claimed the Bass World Classic championship. The father-son duo of Van and Ron Siress from Benton, Kentucky, brought a limit to the scales on Saturday weighing 7.20 lbs. They followed up that effort with three more bass weighing 4.03 lbs. on Sunday. Their two day total of 11.23 lbs. was enough to claim the title, a fully rigged 518VX Ranger boat with 200 h.p. EFI Mercury outboard, and $1,350 in cash. Great job! Winning a tournament in the clear waters of Bull Shoals is a great accomplishment considering this team spends the majority of its time fishing the shallow stained waters of the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers. They concentrated on spotted bass fishing parallel to bluff walls. Their lure of choice was a white Stanley spinnerbait with matching trailer. They rolled the spinnerbait along the bluffs. Some bass hit very shallow, while other came up from 20 - 30 feet to get the offering.

Jerold Dubois and Vince Lato from Arnold and St. Louis, Missouri, claimed second place honors with a two day total of 10.48 lbs. This team was in fourth position after day one with a total of 6.30 lbs. They brought one largemouth bass to the scales on day two weighing 4.18 lbs. This fish claimed big bass honors for the day. It was also the largest fish for the entire tournament. They took home $1,430 for big bass on day two and $3,000 for their second place finish. They ran up river to start the day. Then, they would come down in the dam area to try to catch larger fish. Their baits of choice were the 5/16 oz. and 7/16 oz. Loto Jig tipped with a Ninja Claw trailer. They are sponsored by Mad Dog Baits featuring the Loto Jig.

Finishing third with a two day total of 8.92 lbs. was the team of John Haines of Ashland, Missouri, and John Kaiser of Macks Creek, Missouri. They Carolina rigged finesse worms in 40-60 feet of water to catch their bass.

A total weight of 8.74 lbs. claimed the fourth place spot. John Behiter and Billy Turner Jr fished 8-15 feet deep in stained water to catch their bass.

Tony Waters and Scott McIntyre of Springfield and Decatur, Illinois, brought 8.04 lbs. to the scales during the two day event to claim fifth place. This team was in second place after day one with a total of 6.90 lbs., but could only add one keeper fish to their total. They found bass biting buzzbaits in six inches of water. They caught both largemouth and spotted bass. Their buzzbait pattern is one that they have used successfully in past
Bass World Sports Team Classics on Bull Shoals.

Finishing sixth were past Classic winners, Chris and Tad Richards, with 7.14 lbs. Bill Duncan and Harry Belli finished 7th with 5.44 lbs. Rod Garnier and Steve Smith finished in eighth position with 6.88 lbs.

Conditions on Bull Shoals were tough to say the least. Several weather fronts and storms passed through the area in the days leading up to and during the event. Rain and clouds dominated until Sunday when the front cleared out bringing in bright blue skies and strong afternoon winds. Water temperatures during the tournament ranged from the mid to upper 60's. In the dam area, the temperature was 64-68 degrees. Fish were caught on a variety of presentations from Zara Spooks and buzzbaits to spinnerbaits and Carolina rigged centipedes and finesse worms.

A total of 208 teams competed in the 2001 Bass World Classic. Bob Horrell announced that the 2002 Classic will be held at a new location, one that has never hosted a Bass World Team Classic. So, everyone should be looking for to the 2002 tournament trail.
